Sylvia an adult comedy by A. R. Gurney October 13 - 22, 2006 Transylvania Community Arts Center, Brevard, NC www.tcarts.org
Director: Daisy Talley Producer: Darien Aiken
About the Show This is a romantic comedy about a marriage and a dog, Sylvia, who is a Lab and Poodle mix. She becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. Backstage magazine called the show "The most endearing good time to trot down the pike in a long time .... howlingly funny!" It's a hilarious commentary on mid-life angst, and the role pets play in our lives. Greg and Kate are city dwellers who are adjusting to life after the children have grown and gone. Kate's career as an academic is taking off, while Greg is being transferred to ever more meaningless and unsatisfying work. During a walk in the park, Greg finds an adorable dog with a tag indicating her name is Sylvia. Perhaps she finds him. He brings her home and she immediately establishes herself as his constant companion. She loves him unconditionally, is frisky and playful, loves to be petted and hangs on his every word. Kate recognizes Sylvia as a rival for Greg's affections and a threat to her marriage, and tries to get Greg to give Sylvia up. Soon Greg must choose between wife and dog, and it is not an easy decision for him. Sylvia is a tour-de-force for actors and is a show that plays very well on a small stage. It was a big hit on Broadway, with Sara Jessica Parker in the role of Sylvia.
